Rivals on the field, united off it
Dear editor:
As season 2021/22 kicks off we are calling on football fans across the UK to join forces with us and raise crucial funds to combat the biggest opponent of all.
Cancer Deadline Day, the fundraising campaign running alongside football’s transfer window, is back. On August 31st Macmillan Cancer Support, Pancreatic Cancer UK, Prostate Cancer UK, the Ruth Strauss Foundation, Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Young Lives vs Cancer have teamed up to harness the power of football.
Cancer is a word that strikes fear in the heart. Right now three million people are living with cancer across the UK; cancer remains the single largest cause of death from disease in children and young people in the UK.
Confronted with the Coronavirus pandemic, people affected by cancer have been faced with unquestionable challenges during the past 18 months. Despite the valiant efforts of clinical staff there has been a disruption to cancer care which will have long-term consequences.
We remain universally bonded by a desire to get back on track, to fund vital research to better understand a disease that affects so many people. To support them and their loved ones, and provide information, advice and comfort when they need it most.
By signing up to support Cancer Deadline Day, football clubs and their loyal and passionate communities are making the ultimate signing with an eye on the future, a gamechanger that can help stop this disease wrecking lives.
The inaugural Cancer Deadline Day campaign in January received fantastic support from a vast range of clubs and star names. But that was just the start.
Soon, many clubs will share stories of supporters each affected by the disease and urge their fanbases to dig deep and pledge to play their part.
We all want to see a world where lives are not limited by cancer and we know all our supporters agree.

Thank you.
